M5 MacBook Pro may arrive before OLED M6 in 2026
Apple’s long-awaited leap to OLED for the MacBook Pro, promising deeper blacks, richer colors, slimmer bezels, and improved energy efficiency, appears to be delayed. According to Mark Gurman, the M6 MacBook Pro with an OLED display is now expected between the end of 2026 and early 2027.
This timeline suggests Apple could release an M5 version first, serving as a strategic bridge before its biggest MacBook upgrade in years.
Possible dual-release strategy inspired by 2023
Gurman’s earlier reports hinted that the M5 MacBook Pro might be delayed until 2026. If Apple maintains its annual release cycle, the M6 models could face a one-year delay.
However, the latest information points toward a dual-release approach, similar to 2023 when Apple launched M2 Pro and M2 Max models in January, then introduced M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max versions in October.
If this pattern repeats, the M5 MacBook Pro could arrive in January 2026, followed later that year by the M6 OLED version with a refreshed design.
Samsung's role in the oled upgrade
Samsung Display is expected to supply “tandem” OLED panels using the advanced 8.6 production method. This approach could improve efficiency, reduce costs, and result in a thinner, brighter MacBook Pro with better battery life.
Apple may also remove the notch, replacing it with a hole-punch cutout or a Dynamic Island-like feature, potentially incorporating Face ID for a cleaner design and more usable screen space.
A compelling reason to upgrade
The move to OLED could be a game changer for creative professionals, offering richer color accuracy, better HDR, and deeper blacks. This shift could finally convince M1 and M2 Mac users to upgrade. The enhanced panel would also bring the MacBook Pro closer in visual experience to Apple’s iPhone and iPad lineup.
The M5 macbook pro as a value stopgap
If the OLED MacBook Pro slips to 2027, the M5 model could act as a value option for users who need performance sooner. Such a release might also serve as a marketing strategy to build anticipation for the OLED launch.
