New Chinese hybrid EV Aeolus L8 delivers 1395-mile range and 18-min fast charging

The Dongfeng Aeolus L8 PHEV is one of the most ambitious hybrid vehicles to come out of China in recent years. Combining a powerful engine, advanced battery technology, and long driving range, this plug-in hybrid is designed to challenge global competitors in efficiency and performance.

Chinese Aeolus L8 hybrid shocks market with 1395-mile range

Claiming a tested range of 1,395 miles, the new Dongfeng Aeolus L8 PHEV is set to shake up the plug-in hybrid market with its impressive efficiency and performance.

Powered by the Mach Electric Hybrid system, the L8 delivers a combined 355 horsepower from its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, electric motor, and a 30.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. This ensures smooth acceleration, high energy efficiency, and the flexibility to run on both electric and hybrid modes.

Impressive real-world range

According to CLTC standards, the Aeolus L8 offers two official all-electric ranges of 78 miles and 115 miles. However, real-world testing by the China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC) revealed even more impressive results.

In testing by CATARC, the Aeolus L8 delivered an all-electric range of 154 miles and a comprehensive range of 1,395 miles, placing it among the longest-range plug-in hybrids on the market.

CATARC, established in 1985, plays a crucial role in guiding the development of China’s automotive industry by providing rigorous research, vehicle testing, and regulatory oversight.

Efficiency meets fast charging

The Aeolus L8 is not only about range but also efficiency. It achieved a remarkable 98 miles per gallon equivalent (mpg-e) during CATARC’s comprehensive testing.

It also supports 3C fast charging, allowing its 30.3 kWh battery to charge from 20% to 80% in just 18 minutes under optimal conditions. This makes it convenient for both short commutes and long journeys, reducing downtime and giving drivers peace of mind.

Advanced technology and driver assistance

Beyond performance, the L8 is packed with modern technology. According to official sources, it supports 28 Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features. These include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and parking assistance.

Inside, the vehicle’s cockpit integrates a voice assistant powered by DeepSeek and ByteDance’s Doubao AI, offering intuitive control of vehicle functions. Safety features such as a digital rearview mirror and six airbags enhance protection while ensuring a comfortable and secure driving experience.

Global expansion plans

Dongfeng has plans to bring the Aeolus L8 to international markets, including the Middle East and South America. Since its launch in 2009 as Fengshen, the Aeolus brand has expanded its lineup to include sedans like the S30 and A30, as well as SUVs such as the Haoji.

Recently, Dongfeng consolidated its sub-brands eπ, Fengshen, and Nano into Dongfeng eπ Technology, reflecting the company’s focus on electrified and intelligent vehicles.

Looking toward the future

Dongfeng now operates under two main pillars: Dongfeng eπ for advanced new energy vehicles and Dongfeng Fengshen for traditional and hybrid models. At a recent event, Dongfeng eπ also announced plans to release solid-state battery EVs by 2026.

These future models promise higher energy density, improved safety, and ranges of over 620 miles, setting a new standard for the industry.

As competition heats up in the hybrid and EV market, the Dongfeng Aeolus L8 stands out with its extraordinary range, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology. It marks a significant step forward not only for Dongfeng but also for China’s growing influence in the global automotive industry.
